‘Music Is Language’ explores universal connection created through music. Two people without a shared tongue can communicate intimately through it— making music a language. This project consists of a series of passport-style portraits featuring musicians, artists, and listeners against a white backdrop at jam sessions across London. The format mirrors passport iconography, referencing London’s multicultural music scene — an industry economically vital and culturally rich. The portraits are screenprinted, embracing the texture and grit this process adds to reflect the rawness and humanity of the sitters and live music. Originally exhibited alongside a live audio recording from a jam, the series captures the essence of musical connection through portraits, and now in print form, it is presented alongside black and white imagery of these nights, embracing blur and grain to showcase that energy visually.
